There once was a girl who despised her life, and the only joyful times for her were when she read. She read all kinds of books, fiction and nonfiction, adventure and mystery, all kinds of stories, but her favorite was a book series about cats, the Warrior Cats book series by Erin Hunter. One day, she decided to search online for anything about the books she could find. In the process, she found a role playing site where you could become your own character. She joined and loved it. The site was full of nice people, and she had more fun than she ever had in her life. Through this site, she found others, one of which would stay with her for the rest of her life.
This site was called The Forest of Fates, and it had only a few members. She started off by just joining in the role playing, but soon took part in the chats happening as well. As the girl and a few others joined in, they became close friends. They grew and learned together, helping each other with all kinds of things. The main admin, named Zoe, had become like a sister to the girl, helping her grow from an annoying twelve year old to a mature seventeen year old. She taught her to write better and to be a better person. The others also helped her. Some left, never to return, and some even left only to return unexpectedly later. They grew up together, changed each other for the future. Along the way, she learned to help them as much as they helped her.
As the years went by, the effects that the site had on the girl began to expand into her real life, the one outside of the virtual world. She began gaining habits, both good and bad that she had learned from the group. Even though all of the lessons they taught her were not perfect, she learned, grew, and soon became able to decipher what they taught her.
The only problem was that everyday, she went into a world that only talked about the bad people on the internet. They talked about the pedophiles, stalkers, and just plain mean people. They forced her to be silent about the one place that made her happy because it wasn't normal to them. If she did gain the courage to talk about this place, she was only put down with words of “be careful” and “you don't really know them.” The girl wondered how she didn't know them when she had been talking to them for years, sharing experiences back and forth. These people were her friends, but the world around here didn't want them to exist. That didn't keep her away from them, though. Instead, she just kept them secret.
As more time passed and the world became more open with the world of the internet, so did the girl with her friends. She decided to tell more people about them, and most no longer spoke of the bad things that had been set of repeat years before. By this time, they had become more than friends to her. They were almost family. They supported each other much better than anyone else could.
When she was speaking of these people to someone, they once again brought up the bad things she had been told about before. The only difference was that now she had a response. She said to the person this. “These people could leave me at any time. They could give up when I complain too much, but they don't. They could easily disconnect from the site, unlike those I know in real life.” The person tried to speak in retort, but the girl continued. “They chose me when no one else would. In return, I chose them, even if that meant I would be rejected here in my 'real life'. To me, they are my real life.” Without waiting, the girl walked off, knowing she had made the best decision of her life when she chose to stay on the site. Sometimes disobedience can lead to the best things.
